Trombonophone Privacy Policy

Last updated: 8 October 2026

Trombonophone is a musical instrument played with the front camera of your device. This policy explains what happens to your information when you use it.

The camera

Trombonophone uses the front camera to measure how far the device is from your face and how far your mouth is open. That is how you play it.

Camera frames are analysed on your device. Trombonophone does not record them, does not save them, and does not send them anywhere.

You can withdraw camera access at any time in Settings. The app cannot be played without it.

Recordings

You can record yourself playing. A recording is of the app's screen, which shows you as the camera sees you, and of the sound the app makes. If you choose to record with the microphone, it is also of what the microphone hears; apart from the talk button, described below, the microphone is used for nothing else, and only while such a recording is being made. Recordings are saved to your own photo library and are not sent anywhere. What you do with them after that is up to you.

On Android, the system asks for permission to record audio before any recording, because that permission also covers the sound the app itself makes. The microphone is still used only when you choose to record with it, or hold the talk button.

Trombonophone asks only to add to your photo library. It cannot see what is already in it.

Talking to the trombone

Hold the talk button and speak, and the trombone plays back the melody of what you said. While the button is held, Trombonophone listens through the microphone. What it hears is analysed on your device for its pitch and loudness and then discarded. It is not saved, and it is not sent anywhere.

What is saved on your device

Trombonophone saves your calibration and your choices, such as the tone and the way notes are named, so that they are there the next time you open it. These stay on your device. Deleting the app deletes them.

What we collect

Trombonophone has no accounts and no advertising. We never learn your name, your email address, what the camera sees or what the microphone hears.

We do collect anonymous figures on how the app is used, through Google Analytics for Firebase: that the app was opened, that the calibration was completed, which tone, trigger and naming are chosen, whether the purchase was offered and made, and whether a recording was started. Each installation is known to Google by a number that Firebase makes up, which is not linked to you and which is reset when you delete the app. The advertising identifier of your device is not read. Google's use of this information is covered by its privacy policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy.

Two other pieces of software inside the app, described below, collect information of their own.

Google ML Kit

Trombonophone finds your face using ML Kit, software made by Google. ML Kit analyses images on your device. Google states that ML Kit also collects some information about how it is performing, such as the model of your device, the version of the app, a number that identifies the installation rather than you, and figures on speed and errors.

Google describes this at https://developers.google.com/ml-kit/ios-data-disclosure, and its use of the information is covered by Google's privacy policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy.

Purchases

Part of Trombonophone is unlocked by a single purchase. The payment is handled by Apple. We never see your payment details.

To know whether you have made the purchase, and to give it back to you on a new device, Trombonophone uses RevenueCat. RevenueCat receives a record of the purchase, and knows your installation by an anonymous number that it makes up. We give it no name, no email address and no account.

RevenueCat's use of this information is covered by its privacy policy at https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy.

Children

Trombonophone is suitable for all ages. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be published at this address with a new date.
